48Hours winners set competition alight

Lense Flare’s Pants on Fire was named the Grand Champion on Friday night at the 48Hours Grand Finals at Auckland’s Civic, having burned down a house for the opening scene of their film.

Lense Flare won the competition in 2007 and have been finalists in two of the last three years.

There was no lack of ambition among the other finalists, with runners up Noise & Pictures taking an unusually sombre tack. Noise & Pictures won in 2012 with zombie comedy Brains.

All 14 finalists’ films were screened at the Grand National Final at the Civic Theatre, Auckland as part of the award ceremony where awards in 21 categories were announced.

Josh Thompson again did the hosting honours for most of the evening, this year avoiding the faux pas that tripped him up last year, although he trod close to close to the line again after presenting the award for Best School Team.

Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi introduced an extended clip of What We Do in the Shadows.

A number of winners commented that the competition had been strong this year and, while entry numbers were down on last year, the standard was high. There was no obvious winner. In fact there were a few finalist films which caused a surprise by not by not being named in the top three.

48HOURS Director Ant Timpson said,”Another great year with a well deserving team that didn’t let a tough genre get in their way of delivering a truly ambitious 48hour film.”
