81 in for subtitle gong

The Academy has named the 81 entrant countries and titles for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Entries are down on last year’s record 83, with New Zealand one of the countries giving it a miss this year. Last year Toa Fraser’s The Dead Lands flew the NZ flag. Paraguay is the only foreign language virgin in this year’s field, with Arami Ullón’s doco Cloudy Times.

Two omnibus titles are submitted, Lebanon’s Void and Singapore’s 7 Letters.

This year’s winner (pictured) was Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida.

Nine finalists will be shortlisted in December, with the nominees announced (for all Oscar categories) on 14 January. The Oscar ceremony will take place Monday 29 February (NZ time).
