Academy culls commence

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has begun releasing lists of those titles still in the running for Oscars in a number of short form and craft categories.

There’s no NZ interest in the Animated or Documentary Short categories, but Weta is well-represented in the VFX long-list having had a hand in five of the 20 titles still in contention.

Weta did a little bit of work on Wonder Woman, and significant amounts of the VFX work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Justice League, the glorious mess that was Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and the final part of the Apes reboot, War for the Planet of the Apes (pictured, top). At the beginning of this year Weta won the VFX Oscar for work on Jungle Book.

Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnorak is also in the running, for which Weta Workshop did work, as it did on nominees Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell .

Weta Digital also has nominations at the Annie Awards, with a nod for Avatar Flight of Passage in the Animated Effects in an Animated Production category; and three nods in the Character Animation in a Live Action Production category, for Game of Thrones (ep: Beyond the Wall), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and War for the Planet of the Apes.

At present, 20 titles are still in the race. There’ll be a further cull to 10 titles, and the nominees for all categories will be announced on 24 January (NZ time). The Annies will be presented on 4 February (NZ time). The Oscars will be presented on 5 March (NZ time).
