Tusi Tamasese’s One Thousand Ropes has been knocked out of the race to the subtitle gong at the 2018 Oscar ceremony.
The Academy has named nine titles still in the running. Over half are European, which is no surprise, but to see two films from Africa still in the mix at this stage is unusual.
Senegal is still in with Alain Gomis’ Félicité; South Africa with John Trengove’s The Wound.
Of the European entries still competing this year’s Palme d’Or winner, Ruben Östlund’s The Square from Sweden, is the highest profile title.
The Oscar nominees will be announced on Tuesday, 23 January (US date), although some categories will announce long and short lists between now and then. The Academy Awards wil be presented on 4 March (US date).
