Media Design School, Auckland, 15 June 2016: It’s no accident that Media Design School’s latest short film, Accidents, Blunders and Calamities, has been selected for the 2016 Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival.
Inspired by the Edward Gorey classic, Accidents, Blunders and Calamities is the tale of a father possum reading a cautionary bedtime story to his children about the most dangerous animal… humans!
This black comedy for kids and parents alike is a hilarious and brutal alphabet of death and mayhem exacted upon animals by ignorant humans. A total of 30 CGI animals were meticulously crafted and killed by a team of 44 third year Bachelor of Art and Design students.
Bachelor of Art and Design senior lecturer and award-winning director James Cunningham says that the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival is the perfect fit for a film like Accidents, Blunders and Calamities.
“Comic-Con International: San Diego is the mecca of pop-cultural craziness and they have an awesome film festival running alongside the absolute madness of the main exhibition,”
“To be put up on a stage at that level is a great achievement and I am very proud of our weird little animation” says Cunningham.
Cunningham, a celebrated New Zealand filmmaker and producer, has directed 13 award-winning short films featuring 3D animation and visual effects. This will be Cunningham’s second film that has been accepted into the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival.
Accidents, Blunders and Calamities has already won a number of accolades and awards including the People’s Choice Award and the DEGNZ Best Editor Award at New Zealand’s only Academy Awards accredited film festival, Show Me Shorts. It has also picked up prizes at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film; BCN Sports Film Festival; and has previously screened at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival.
Accidents, Blunders & Calamities is currently also playing in competition at this year’s Annecy Festival.
COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL: SAN DIEGO 2016 will take place from the 21–24 July 2016.
