Among the 223 film professionals invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this year are director Niki Caro (Whale Rider, The Vintner’s Luck, McFarland USA) and a trio of Wellington-based team members from Peter Jackson’s group of companies: Daniel Barrett, Jason Conovas, and Erik Winquist.
Animation supervisor Barrett, formerly at Oktobor, has been with Weta Digital since the Jane & the Dragon TV show, and is one of probably very few people at Weta not credited on a Peter Jackson-directed title.
Sound editor Canovas joined The Lord of the Rings as dialogue editor and has worked on all Peter Jackson titles since, plus a few local titles including Second Hand Wedding and Boy.
VFX supervisor Winquist, who joined Weta during Lord of the Rings as has worked on many titles there since, including Avatar and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Caro’s McFarland USA released earlier this year to mostly positive reviews. She’s currently advancing her biopic of Maria Callas, which earlier this year announced Noomi Rapace as the lead.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September
