Although Team New Zealand snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, Animation Research’s America’s Cup app sailed past the opposition to take the inaugural Outstanding New Approaches – Sports Event Coverage Emmy in New York on Wednesday.
Those opponents were the PGA Tour, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the NFL.
Animation Research’s Ian Taylor has worked on several America’s Cup events dating back to before Team New Zealand landed the trophy in San Diego in 1995. The series was the second America’s Cup outing for Animation Research’s 1991 Winged Keel graphics package. The software, which looks beautifully quaint two decades on, was the world’s first live 3D animated graphics for sports coverage.
After this week’s Emmy win, Taylor was very quick to share the love, noting that four of five Sports Emmy nominations for the America’s Cup had involved NZ companies.
The app wasn’t a pure Animation Research job either, with Cannonball Software and Moving Pixel both heavily involved in the development of the app.
