Apes score hat-trick at VES

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took three gongs from its nominations at this year’s Visual Effects Society Awards in the US on Thursday (NZ time).

Apes led the pack on the way in with five nods to The Hobbit’s four, although nine wins were never on the cards as several of those nominations were competing with each other.

Joe Letteri, Ryan Stafford, Matt Kutcher, Dan Lemmon and Hannah Blanchini took the headline Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture category for their work on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as The Hobbit ended the evening shut out from the gongs.

Apes completed its hat-trick with wins in Performance and Compositing categories.

Paul Story, Eteuati Tema, Andrea Merlo and Emiliano Padovani took the gong for Outstanding Performance of an Animated Character for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, Caesar. Christoph Salzmann, Florian Schroeder, Quentin Hema and Simone Riginelli won the Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picturegong, also for Apes.

Outside of the live action feature categories, the only real NZ interest was a nomination in the Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Broadcast Program category. Neil Cross’ Crossbones missed out to American Horror Story.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 made a clean sweep of the gongs on offer for animated features, while Game of Thrones did well in the broadcast categories.

As announced previously, producer JJ Abrams (Lost and many other titles) was presented with the VES Visionary award. Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Colombiana, Guardians of the Galaxy) did the honours.
