Polish Pawel Pawlikowski’s black and white drama Ida was the big winner, taking Best Film, Cinematographer, Director and Screenplay, as well as the People’s Choice Award.
In 2010 Samuel Moaz’s Levanon/Lebanon was a winner at both the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Eurpoean Film Awards. This year, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (Russia) and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Winter Sleep (France, Germany, Turkey) benefitted from some geography of convenience to achieve nominations at both events. By the end of the event both the APSA champion and Cannes Palme d’Or winner had been shut out in Riga, neither collecting a single gong.
A number of the EFA winners screened here earlier in the year in the NZIFF, including Locke, Two Days One Night and Under the Skin. Editor Justine Wright (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland) returned to NZ to offer mentoring through a DEGNZ programme. Last week she was a BIFA nominee last week for her work on Locke. At the EFA she went one better by winning the gong for Editing.
