ASD ready to roll

While the event identifies as “Asian” it’s very heavily China-focused in its 2015 edition, with a day dedicated to pitching Chinese projects before the conference opens.

There’s certainly plenty of opportunity for factual and documentary programming on Chinese TV at present, with new quota regulations coming into force. A couple of crackdowns on corruption and the growth of reality programming have also created new opportunities for programme creators.

The event is claiming c600 delegates, with the NZ participants being Rialto Channel’s Roger Wyllie, and NHNZ’s Kyle Murdoch and Felix Feng. Australia has a 20-strong contingent travelling, with Screen Australia supporting a co-ordinated presence at the event and two Australian projects in the pitch competition which is the backbone of ASD.

Last year Leland Ling and Steven Seidenberg from LIC, China’s largest producer of documentary content, presented on the state of documentary filmmaking in and with China at the Screen Edge Forum.

Asian Side of the Doc runs 17 – 20 March in Xiamen, China.
