BAFTAS nod twice at Hobbit

Three titles dominated the nominations, with Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity leading the pack with 11 nods. Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips received 10 apiece.

From this side of the world, The Hobbit 2 provided one presenter for the nominations, Luke Evans, and received two nods, for Hair & Make-Up (Peter Swords King, Richard Taylor, Rick Findlater) and VFX (Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, Eric Reynolds). Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby took a single nod, in the production design category.

Across the categories, there’s increasing evidence of “British” films being squeezed out by international (predominantly US) fare. Or, looked at another way, the nominations list is a strong reminder of the importance incentives play in attracting business.

The Outstanding British Film category offers up six titles. Even here, two titles are nominated most would identify as US studio features: Warner Brothers’ Gravity, which shot locations in the US and studio in the UK and Canada; and Disney’s almost entirely US-shot Saving Mr Banks. Of the other four titles, only one (The Selfish Giant) was financed and shot solely in the UK.

The BAFTAS film awards run Monday 17 February (NZ time).
