Box Office holds strong for Q3

At the three quarter mark for the year, the 2016 takings continue to run comfortably ahead of the numbers for the last two years.

At the year’s halfway mark, the box office total was just shy of $104.9 million, 6% ahead of 2015’s $99 million. That lead has grown over the third quarter. This year’s earnings over 9 months sit at just below $155.3, 10.5% ahead of last year’s $140.5 million.

While the $12 million Hunt for the Wilderpeople has taken has certainly helped the totals, its impact was felt much more strongly in the second quarter during the early weeks of its run.

Strong performers in the third quarter have included Suicide Squad (pictured, top) and Jason Bourne, both still on release at the end of the quarter with $5.3 million and $3 million respectively. Helped by some spectacularly crap weather for the first week of the current school holidays, The Secret Life of Pets is also likely to pass $3 million.
