The 2015 box office is well ahead of the 2014 earnings at the year’s halfway mark. The strong performance comes off a weak start to the year. Not until mid-March did 2015 earnings begin to look better than last year’s.
By 1 July this year’s box office, $98.97 million to date, is running almost 15% ahead of last year’s earnings for the first 26 weeks.
The best-performing 2015 releases so far have all been franchise features: Fast & Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World.
There’s been no real local interest to speak of beyond Chris Pryor & Miriam Smith’s still-on-release The Ground We Won, currently sitting just over $300,000. Co-pro title Slow West had a short run, taking $67,449.
NZ titles are either yet to arrive (Deathgasm and co-pro Turbo Kid both make their first appearances in the NZIFF later this month) or are receiving very limited or hybrid releases, as I Survived A Zombie Holocaust has.
