The Asian Project Market (APM) heads into its 18th edition with 30 projects announced on Monday.
A small number come from familiar names, although none have direct NZ connections. In the game of 6 Degrees, the title with closest NZ link is Nandita Das’ Indian project Manto. Das was director of Shuchi Kothari’s 2008 feature Firaaq. (Later this month, Kothari will chair discussions hosted by Script to Screen and DEGNZ on Leslee Unwin’s India’s Daughter.)Among the more established filmmakers presenting projects will be Indian Kanu BEHL, whose Titli premiered in Un Certain Regard last year. Indonesian Mouly Surya will present Marlina The Murderer In Four Acts. His Sundance-premiered What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love (2013) has become one of Indonesia’s most internationally successful films.
The one title from outside Asia is Hana MAKHMALBAF’s London Stories, follow-up to her 2009 Green Days which was well-received at Venice and Toronto. The London-based Makhmalbafs are an established filmmaking family. Hana’s brother will produce London Stories. Her father’s The President was selected at the Busan IFF last year.
Among the locals, LEESONG Heeil (Night Flight, Berlinale, 2014) is possibly the best-known.
Last year Vietnamese director Phan Dang Di took the headline US$20,000 Busan award for Full Moon Party, sequel to his 2010 Bi, Don’t Be Afraid which played well on the international festival circuit after taking two prizes at Cannes.
The Asian Project Market will run 4 – 6 October in Busan. Projects are listed alphabetically by title.
