Cannes Lions is under way in France, with the first finalist nominations being announced over the weekend. NZ agencies received 22 nominations across the Direct, PR, and Promo & Activation categories, but zero in Innovation.
All up the Lions received 37,427 entries from 97 countries this year, which will be judged by 327 judges from 44 countries. Almost 5,000 entries were submitted for the Film and Film Craft categories, despite entries in the Film category falling by 9%. Overall, entries were up 5% on 2013.
The first categories for which winners will be announced will be Creative Effectiveness, Direct, Innovation, PR, and Promo & Activation. Among the early NZ contenders will be Sky TV’s launch for season 4 of Game of Thrones. The #BRINGDOWNTHEKING campaign is nominated for a Direct Lion. The toppling, carried out in Aotea Square, lasted almost as long as the show’s opening credits.
The winners are named in those categories will be named on Wednesday NZ time. Early tomorrow (Tuesday) the finalists will be announced for several more categories.
Finalists for the Branded Content & Entertainment, Film Craft and Film categories are announced late Friday/early Saturday NZ time, with the gongs handed out on Sunday NZ time.
