Caro juggles sports, singers and National Socialists

The Whale Rider director is presently attached to three projects heading towards production.

The sports-focused McFarland this week announced Kevin Costner as lead, playing a coach in the Disney 1980s-set story of a Hispanic California town`s athletics team.

The script is by first-time feature writer Grant Thompson and the rather more experienced William Broyles Jr. (Flags of Our Fathers, Jarhead, Cast Away, Apollo 13).

Caro is also attached to direct World War II-set The Zookeeper’s Wife, based on Diane Ackerman`s book, about Warsaw Zoo, where hundreds of Jews were hidden among the animals during the Nazi occupation.

Jessica Chastain (Mama, Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) is announced as the titular character.

The screenplay is by Angela Workman, who seems to specialise in period pieces, having written previous WWII feature War Brides, China-set period piece Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and an in-production biopic of the Bronte Sisters.

Caro has another biopic on her schedule. She was announced two years ago as the writer-director of Italian-funded Callas. The script was to be developed from Alfonso Signorini`s biography Too Proud, Too Fragile. The project is listed as a 2013 release on IMDb, but little has been announced since 2011.
