Carol leads 2016 Spirit nominees

A few well-known festival titles, plus a lot titles yet to travel outside the US, make up the nominees list for February’s Spirit Awards.

Beasts of No Nation, Carol (pictured) and Tangerine all compete for the Best Film and Best Director awards. Carol has six nominations overall, including ones for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the Best Actress category. In May Mara won Cannes’ Best Actress gong for her performance.

Among the Best Actor nominees is Beasts of No Nation’s Abraham Attah, who’s currently on screens here in Show Me Shorts title Out of the Village. In the Doco line-up is (T)ERROR, whose co-director Lyric Cabral presented at this year’s Screen Edge Forum.

The Spirit Awards are presented on 28 February (NZ time), a day ahead of the Academy Awards. The 2016 nominees are:
