Chief Gary up and running

Working hard for the money, Josh Thomson et al are under way with Chief Gary. The feature has begun principal photography this week in Rarotonga, as Jarrod Holt, Nigel McCulloch and Ryan Hutchings aka thedownlowconcept (7 Days, Hounds, Coverband) embark on their debut feature.

Josh Thomson (Hounds, Short Poppies) is joined in front of the camera by David Fane (Outrageous Fortune, Sione’s Wedding), Matt Whelan (Go Girls, 3 Mile Limit) and American actress Megan Stevenson (Comedy Central’s Review).

The feature is one produced by downlowconcept’s Matt McPhail and Fiona Copland for Field Theory.

Chief Gary is Field Theory’s first feature, from the team of Copland (Matariki, Topless Women Talk About Their Lives), Philippa Campbell (Top of the Lake) and Tim Sanders (Kiwi Flyer, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring). It’s one of four features currently in production involving companies supported under the NZFC’s Business Development Scheme.

The film shoots in Rarotonga for four weeks and will shoot in Auckland for a week on its return.
Chief Gary is being made with investment from the New Zealand Film Commission, NZ On Air, Whale Watching Rarotonga and the Rarotonga Meat Board. Production partners include ImageZone, Blockhead, Fulcrum Media, Rialto Distribution and NZME.
