Cunningham retrospective for Taiwan

James Cunningham has been named a filmmaker focus for the Kaohsiung Film Festival in Taiwan, which will present nine of his shorts in a programme Amusing the World: The Short Films of James Cunningham.

This year working to the theme Foolish Times other filmmakers featured in the festival will include Charlie Chaplin, Michael Gondry and (animated works by) Lotte Reiniger.

Cunningham’s titles to presented at the festival are Das Tub, Dr. Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game, First Contact, Infection, Over the Moon, Poppy, Rotting Hill, Shelved and Time for Change.

Over the Moon

Formerly with Weta Digital and Digital Post, Cunningham teaches on Media Design School’s Bachelor of Art and Design courses, working with students on several of the films in the Kaohsiung line-up.

Cunningham’s films have a boatload of awards with the most recent, Over the Moon, collecting a Jury Special Award at SIGGRAPH Asia last year. He’ll attend screenings to do Q&A sessions and will serve on the jury for the festival’s international short film competition.

No NZ titles are named in the competition line-up, which includes two Australian shorts: Anthony Lawrence’s Grace Under Water and Keiran Watson-Bonnice’s Caravan.

The Kaohsiung Film Festival runs 23 October – 8 November.
