As Hunt for the Wilderpeople goes into production, Curious takes the opportunity to promote its diverse production and distribution offer.
As well as Waititi’s in-production feature, Curious also has a hand in the first NZ-India co-production, Pan Nalin’s Beyond The Known World. Written by Dianne Taylor, featuring David Wenham (Lord of the Rings, 300,Top of the Lake), Chelsie Preston Crayford (The Inland Road, Hope and Wire, What We Do in the Shadows) and Sia Trokenheim (Step Dave, Everything We Loved), Beyond The Known World is produced by Kristian Eek (The Most Fun You Can Have Dying, Manurewa) and Matthew Horrocks (The Last Saint, The Forgotten General).
Curious has in development a number of titles including UK-NZ co-production Mystery Ride, to be directed by Virginia Heath (From Scotland with Love), with a stellar confirmed cast including Big Screen Symposium speaker Peter Mullan (Sunshine on Leith) and Sam Neill, who’s also starring in Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Curious distributes through its distribution arm, set up in 2010 by Noonan and former NZFC exec Michael Wrenn, focused on “distinctive cinema which will directly benefit from a bespoke, focused release and marketing strategy”.
As well as the very high-profile Winter’s Bone, Kim Mordaunt’s Laos-set Aussie charmer The Rocket and Curtis Vowell’s Fantail, the company also distributed debut feature Shifty from Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch), which the NZFC used to launch its Escalator scheme.
