Directors Fortnight looks mostly close to home

The Directors Fortnight delivers a few old French hands – including Gerard Depardieu and Juliette Binoche in Claire Denis’s opening title Un Beau Soleil Intérieur – and newer faces including UK-Zambian Rungano Nyoni, whose I Am Not a Witch is among the debut features selected.

The heavily Euro-centric line-up also includes Cary Murnion & Jonathan Milott’s Sundance-premiered Bushwick, on sale through XYZ Films which also sold Toa Fraser’s upcoming 6 Days and previous The Dead Lands. XYZ also has Macon Blair’s I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore, featuring Melanie Lynskey, which took the US Dramatic award at Sundance earlier this year.

Among the non-Euro titles, Indonesian Surya Mouly’s now-completed Marlina The Murderer in Four Acts was in Cannes last year at the Cannes Cinefondation’s Atelier. The director’s 2013 What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love picked up awards at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival, Las Palmas and Rotterdam.

Another Sundance title, Geremy Jasper’s Patti Cake$, is one of the the first features selected for Directors Fortnight, which also qualify for consideration for the Camera d’Or. The others are Roberto De Paolis’ Cuori Puri, Rungano Nyoni’s previously-noted I Am Not A Witch, Natalia Santa’s La Defensa Del Dragon, and Sonia Kronlund’s Nothingwood.

Tangerine writer-director Sean Baker is selected with The Florida Project, which is on sale through the UK’s Protagonist Pictures. Protagonist also has Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the Ant Timpson-produced The Greasy Strangler in its bag.

Directors Fortnight will run 18 – 28 May. The selections are below. Critics Week will announce its selections on 24 April, and will run 18 – 26 May. The Cannes Film Festival will run 17 – 28 May.
