Christopher Dudman’s The Day That Changed My Life, documenting the Christchurch earthquake, Was the stand-out local winner at Doc Edge in Auckland on Friday evening.

Dudman took Best New Zealand Director, Editor, and Feature gongs, with judges saying that even though it addressed subject matter that’s very familiar to NZ audiences, “The film surprised us all, revealing fresh truths and painful realisations.”

As previously announced, Chris McDonald was named Documentary Edge International Superhero, for his work over many years at Hot Docs Toronto. McDonald has overseen staggering growth for the festival, which now puts over 200,000 bums on seats. During his time in NZ McDonald has been working Doc Edge on strategies for growing the festival here.

“We are tremendously lucky and grateful to have the support of a visionary leader. Chris McDonald has generously provided us with his sage advice to enable us to grow under his tutelage,” said Alex Lee and Dan Shanan, co-directors of Documentary Edge Festival.

The 10th anniversary edition of the Documentary Edge Festival plays Auckland’s Q Theatre until Monday 1 June, and Wellington’s The Roxy Cinema from 3 – 14 June.

The Screen Edge Forum runs in Wellington 4 June.
