Rehad Desai’s Miners Shot Down won the Doc Edge Best International Feature Documentary award at a ceremony in Wellington last night. The jury also gave two films a special mention, Hemal Trevadi & Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s Among The Believers and Roksareh Ghaemmaghami’s Sonita.
Susan Parker’s Loving in Limbo took the NZ awards for feature doco and director,
The change this year that has seen the Festival play in Wellington ahead of its run in Auckland has paid off for the Festival, with several sessions selling out and Doc Edge’s Dan Shanan commenting that this year attendance was considerably up on previous years.
Among the festival’s short selections Dean Easterbrook & Dave Henderson’s On the Backs of Women took the NZ award, while A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness took the International Short Documentary award – perhaps predictably after the film won an Academy Award earlier in the year.
The Doc Edge Superhero Award this year went to photographer Marti Friedlander, whose career spans over 50 years. The black and white cover images for this year’s Festival programme were shot by Friedlander in the 1970s. Friedlander was herself the subject of a documentary, Shirley Horrocks’ 2004 Marti: the Passionate Eye. An exhibition of her work will run at Q Theatre in Auckland during the festival run there.
The Doc Edge Festival closes in Wellington on Sunday 15 May. The Festival runs in Auckland 18-29 May 2016. The Screen Edge Forum ran in Wellington today (13 May) and runs in Auckland on 18 May 2016.
