The Documentary New Zealand Trust, organiser of the last 4 DOCNZ festivals and accompanying Summits, has thrown out the old and ushered in its new branding at its vertigo-inspiring launch in the Quadrant penthouse on Wednesday evening.
All events will now travel under the Doc Edge brand, developed for the Trust by brand strategist and former NZFC board member Brian Richards and realised by designer Simon Cohen.
Introducing the brand, Brian spoke eloquently of Dante, being at the edge of the world, edginess and Simon’s work in achieving a bold clarity and simplicity for the new brand. The graphics are indeed clean and simple, retaining the old DOCNZ tagline “Life Unscripted”, hand-written by Simon as using an existing font for ‘unscripted’ felt as though it was going against the spirit of what the new branding was trying to achieve.
The other change announced was that Ewa Bigio, one of the original directors of the Trust, has moved into an advisory role, having become too busy running Smiley World Film Sales to devote as much time to the Trust.
The festival programme announcements outlined the festival’s sections and those films competing in the International and New Zealand competitions. Further competition announcements will come over the next month. The awards bash will be on Wednesday 3 March in Auckland, and will be covered by Triangle Stratos as part of their sponsorship of the festival and screened shortly afterwards, on a date TBA.
The awards bash falls on the final day of the Doc Edge Forum (as we must all now learn to call the old DOCNZ Summit) and, despite being well and truly doccered after full three days of providing coverage, we’ll also drag ourselves along to make merry and report on it, albeit with fewer cameras than Triangle Stratos.
Outside of the international and local competition threads, the festival sections will be Best of Fest, a selection of recent popular and award-winning documentaries; Culture Vultures, films celebrating the arts and culture; Heroes & Icons and World Cinema, both of which speak for themselves. The country Spotlight will be China, with films curated by the Guangzhou international Documentary Festival (GZDOC); the other spotlight will be Eco-Warriors.
The festival screens in Auckland at the Rialto, Newmarket 27 Feb – 14 March and in Wellington at Angelika at Reading Cinemas Courtenay and the City Art Gallery 13 – 28 March. The opening night film in both cities will be the international premiere (in Auckland at least) of The Boys: The Sherman Brothers Story.
Produced by Ben Stiller and featuring Julie Andrews, Angela Lansbury, Dick van Dyke, Samuel Goldwyn Junior and other people you assumed were already dead, it pays tribute to the talented if estranged Richard and Robert Sherman, who wrote Disney classics ranging from Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, the score for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Jungle Book’s I Wanna Be like You.

The festival’s closing film will also be an American offering, Art & Copy, the real-life Mad Men focusing on the people creating the iconic advertising campaigns that have become part of the cultural landscape, like Got Milk?.
In between, 54 other films from 25 countries, selected from over 560 entries (who’d be a programmer!) of which … 11 are World premieres, 8 are international premieres, 18 are Asia-Pacific premieres, 9 are Australasian premieres, 10 are NZ premieres and 16 will screen in competition.
