Early runners warm up for subtitle gong

Candidates are lining up in the Academy’s rest of the world category, the subtitle gong.

Ruben Östlund’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Square (pictured, top) will fly the flag for Sweden, with fellow Cannes winner In The Fade by Fatih Akin representing Germany.

No NZ entry has been declared (yet), with submissions for the Foreign Language Film category closing 3 October (NZ date). In recent years, Tusi Tamasese’s The Orator, Toa Fraser’s The Dead Lands and Pietra Brettkelly’s A Flickering Truth have all had a crack, but without achieving nominations.

Australia’s Tanna was a nominee for this year’s awards, missing out to Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman. Farhadi’s A Separation won the gong in 2011.

Remaining Academy submission deadlines run 20 September (feature doco) to 1 December. The Oscar nominations will be announced 23 January.
