Seriously Entertainment’s Wellington-made apocalyptic web series End of Term won two Outstanding Achievement Awards at the weekend’s LA Web Fest.
Tane Upjohn-Beatson won the awards for Outstanding Sound Design and Score, both times beating fields that included nominees from Australian webseries Airlock and Wastelander Panda.
Upjohn-Beatson’s no stranger to composing for short content. A regular composer for Traces of Nut ( How to Meet Girls from a Distance and 48 Hours winner The Sleeping Plot), he won the Best Original Score gong at last year’s 48Hours grand final for Sound Sleep.
End of Term had two other nominations at the Los Angeles event, Outstanding Directing for series creator Chaz Harris and Outstanding Lead Actress for Brogan Wilkinson (Harper).
End of Term was shot in Wellington in 2015 with the help of Avalon Studios and Scots College and held its world premiere at the inaugural NZ WebFest in November. It’s available to view on YouTube and TVNZ OnDemand. The show follows a disparate group of teens, caught up in a viral outbreak which forces them to confront their differences and band together to survive.
The web series is the second Harris has created which has won awards at the LA WebFest. His 2011 101 Dates took seven awards including Outstanding Comedy Series.
After the results were announced Harris said, “I was thrilled to bring another web series to LA WebFest. Thank you to Michael Ajakwe, Jr. and the team involved in organising the event for these awards acknowledging Tane’s amazing work to bring our series to life through his phenomenal sound design and music.
“I’d also like to acknowledge our whole cast and Wellington based crew, because without their hard work and enthusiasm, there’d be nothing for Tane to breathe more life into.”
Harris also announced today that he and most of the cast will attend Wellington Armageddon Expo where they’ll present a Cast and Creator panel on Saturday 4 June.
