Canopy premiered in Toronto last year and has played in and out of competition at a number of major Asian festivals including Busan, Shanghai and Taipei. The film has also played a half dozen other international film festivals, although the win in southern France is its first on the festival circuit.

Ma Currie’s Everything We Loved, the only NZ title in the Festival des Antipodes competition line-up, took the Best Actor gong for Brett Stewart.

Toby Wallace received a Special Mention for his turn in Rhys Graham’s teen drama Galore’s. The Best Actress gong was shared between Galore’s female leads, Ashleigh Cummings and Lily Sullivan.

The Festival des Antipodes, or Rencontres Internationales du Cinéma des Antipodes to give its full title, ran 13 – 19 October.
