A Flickering Truth takes share of $100,000

Pietra Brettkelly’s Afghanistan-set A Flickering Truth is one of nine documentary projects to receive support from the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund (GTDF). The Fund received 560 submissions for its 2014 round.

Brettkelly’s film was the winner of last year’s Screen Edge Forum DOCPitch, when the film was still travelling as Flickering Time Bomb. As Time Bomb the film received NZFC production funding last year and travelled to IDFA’s Central Pitch, where it pitched alongside other titles awarded by the GTDF, Freedom Fighters and Afghan Justice.

The jury this year included ITVS’ Claire Aguilar, and actor Alec Baldwin. As well as a cheque, the fund’s awardees receive practical support and guidance from the Tribeca Film Institute to help them complete and release their films.

The project supported that’s receiving the most press attention in the US is Freedom Fighters, about a Dallas detective agency established by three African-Americans who were wrongfully convicted and imprisoned. Following the announcement of the death of actress and activist Ruby Dee, the film’s subject matter is sadly topical.
