Following on from the extremely successful Packed to the Rafters and the short-lived Winter ex-pat actress Rebecca Gibney will lead Aussie TV series Wanted. The show comes from Matchbox Pictures, the team behind The Slap, Devil’s Playground, and Tony Ayres’ kids’ show Nowhere Boy and feature Cut Snake, which is presently doing the rounds on the festival circuit.
Wanted follows two strangers who intervene in a deadly carjacking only to be swept up in a roller coaster chase across Australia in a car full of money. The show was one of three projects for which Screen Australia announced support early this week.
Also supported were comedy telefeature A Few Less Men, sequel to 2011’s A Few Best Men, from Death at a Funeral writer Dean Craig; and Australia-China co-production feature The Nest. Kimble Rendall will direct the VFX-heavy title, hoping to repeat the success of his Australia-Singapore co-production, sharks-in-the-supermarket Bait 3D. That film was about to be consigned to the bargain bin of Australian film history when it released in China and suddenly went crazy like, well, a shark in a supermarket.
Creature features, especially 3D ones, often command good market share in China, as the makers of schlocker Million Dollar Crocodile (packaged internationally as Croczilla) can attest.
