Ginny Loane Cinematographer of the Year

On Saturday evening in Auckland, the NZ Cinematographers Society held their inaugural awards bash over dinner at the Heritage.

The winner of the evening’s top prize, the Cinematographer of the Year award, was Ginny Loane for Mahana, whose director Lee Tamahori was in the audience. Antonia Prebble, well used to be stared at by camera people, entertained as the MC for the evening.

Among the guests was American cinematographer Tom Stern, a regular collaborator of Clint Eastwood’s, who did an In Conversation session with Simon Riera before the evening’s events.

The awards were a mammoth undertaking for a first run out, not only handing out awards in 13 competitive categories, but also handing those awards out in bronze, silver and gold flavours. Organisers also did a great job bringing on a raft of sponsors, led by the Weta Group of Companies.

A dozen judges, moderated by Dave Cameron and Peter Parnham, assessed over 150 entries with around a third coming away with an award. As it’s the first time the awards have run, there was a bumper crop of material under consideration, some of it dating back well over a year, including features The Dead Lands, Deathgasm and The Dark Horse. In future years, entrants will face a tighter time frame before work ceases to be eligible.
