Golden Horse saddles up

The present and former chairs of the Golden Horse Film Festival have films nominated for this year’s Golden Horse Awards.

Former chair and head of the Academy programme (which NAN Hui will attend shortly) Hou Hsiao-Hsien will receive the festival’s Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year award, capping off a good year. Hou won the Best Director gong in Cannes for The Assassin, which has gone on to a successful run on the festival circuit, and picks up 11 nominations for Golden Horse gongs including Best Film, Director, and Lead Actress for Shu Qi (pictured). The Assassin has the most nominations afforded to any title.

Hou wasn’t in Taiwan for the announcement, instead being one of the guests of honour in Korea at the opening of the Busan International Film Festival,

Close on the heels of The Assassin are two films that have had played a lot of genre festivals: Tso-chi Chang’s Berlin-premiered Thanatos, Drunk (10) and Philip Yung’s Port of Call (9).

Present chair Sylvia Chang’s Murmur of the Hearts, which premiered at this year’s Hong Kong IFF, has three nominations.

427 films were submitted for consideration this year, up from last year’s 364.

All nominated titles play in the Golden Horse Film Festival, which runs 11 – 26 November. The award winners are named at an event on 21 November.
