HAF 2016 names strong line-up

The Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) has named its 2016 line-up, bringing in 28 projects plus three for the development award.

Selected from a record 350 submissions, several familiar names make the cut. Last March Sylvia Chang opened the Hong Kong IFF with Murmur of the Heart, which earlier this week won the screenplay award at the Hong Kong Film Critics’ Society ceremony. This March she’ll return to Hong Kong for HAF (which is organised by the HKIFF) as producer for Lieutenant Yi by Rene Liu, well-known in Taiwan as an actress and singer.

Also from Taiwan Doze Niu, whose Berlinale-premiered ensemble dramedy Love travelled well in 2012, also dons a producer’s hat, for Huang Zi’s From Black and White to Shades of Grey.

Filipino director Lav Diaz has A Lullaby for the Mystery named in competition for this year’s Berlinale, and will bring The Waves Are Gone to HAF. Diaz’s Norte, The End of History had a strong festival run in 2013.

Among the local Hong Kong selections are Trains in the Night from Adam Wong, whose The Way We Dance (pictured, top) won several awards in 2013. Among the producers of Trains is Hiroshi Fukazawa, who’s been a great help to international journalists including this writer attending HAF and Filmart in recent years.

Among the projects competing for the HAF/Fox development award is Coarse Tea, Plain Rice, for whichTrevor Morris is named producer. Hong Kong-based lawyer Morris, who’s worked with Pukeko and other companies in the Weta group, presented at the 2012 SPADA Conference.

Following The Weight of Elephants producer Katja Adomeit’s participation at HAF last year with Shahrbanoo Sadat’s Afghanistan-Denmark co-production Wolf and Sheep, another Scandinavian co-pro is named this year: Jero YUN & Marte VOLD’s Letters, from Denmark, Norway and South Korea.
