Kiwis still in gong race (updated)

Titles with NZ connections are still in the mix, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (pictured, top), and War for the Planet of the Apes on the shortlist. Also still in there is Blade Runner., to which Weta Workshop contributed.

The other remaining contenders are Alien: Covenant (which did some shooting here), Dunkirk, Kong: Skull Island, Netflix’s Okja, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and the just-released Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Although Ghost in the Shell didn’t survive the cut to 10 titles, it’s now one of seven films shortlisted for the Hair and Make-Up gong. Also named in that line-up is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The nominees for all Oscar categories will be announced on 24 January, with the ceremony running 5 March (both NZ dates). At this year’s Oscars, Weta won the VFX Oscar for work on Jungle Book.
