Koreans share awards love

Korea’s two major film award events run a week apart in late November. Despite sharing many of the same categories, qualification criteria and nominees, the results were not very similar.

Yoon Je Kyun’s overly sentimental Ode to My Father took the Best Film gong at Korea’s Grand Bell Awards, capping off an excellent night for the title, which took 10 gongs in total. A week later at the Blue Dragon Awards, the story was a very different one. Choi Dong-hoon’s Assassination took Best Film, while Ode to My Father took three other awards.

Although Assassination lead Jun Ji Hyun (pictured, top) missed out on the Best Actress gong at the Blue Dragon Awards to Lee Jung-hyun (indie title Alice in Earnestland) Jun won at the Grand Bell.

Only two categories produced the same winner across the two events. Oh Dal-su took Best Supporting Actor for his role in Ode to My Father at both the Grand Bell and Blue Dragon, while Lee Yoo-young also doubled up on Best New Actress awards, albeit for different roles.

The Throne, Korea’s foreign language Oscar submission, did better at the Blue Dragon awards and, playing away from home, took out the Grand Prix at Tallinn Black Nights over the weekend.
