LA Screenings offers few Kiwis

The LA Screenings will kick off Friday NZ time with the independents having first shot before the big studio boys and girls come out to play on Friday. Attending NZ broadcasters will try to guess which of the new shows will be loved in the US, and therefore avoid being baby seals when the culling starts next year.

Ahead of the event, the major US broadcasters present their “upfronts” flagging the cancellations, renewals and new commissions for the (northern hemisphere) autumn season, beginning September. Last year’s choices offered up a mixed bag, with the Katherine Heigl-ledState of Affairs one of the highest-profile kills. However, several other shows bought by NZ broadcasters have also been put to the sword, including TV3’s detective show Backstrom and TV One’s inaccurately-titled Forever.

There’s limited direct NZ interest in the fare on offer in LA, with last year’s Cliff Curtis-led Gang Related not being renewed. Curtis does reappear in Walking Dead spin-off prequel Fear the Walking Dead (fka Cobalt).

The equally undead-themed iZombie, led by Rose McIver and screening here on TVNZ ondemand, will run into a second season. A fourth season of Cinemax’s Antony Starr-led Banshee is also confirmed.

Tandi Wright features in The Returned, Netflix’s remake of French series Les Revenants which is currently screening. A+E has yet to confirm whether ot not the show will be renewed, but it’s not in the list of shows the broadcaster has highlighted for LA Screenings.

Despite not making the jump to the US version of Secrets & Lies, Martin Henderson has two series of The Red Road under his belt, being shopped at LA Screenings by eOne.

The LA Screenings run 14 – 21 May, with independents offering their wares from today until Saturday.
