Two films with some NZ interest screen in surf film fest Wavescape, part of the Durban IFF. Matt Katsolis’ Fading West, shot across several southern hemisphere locations, screens alongside Marina Zawisza’s 3 Killas Y Un Kiwi, the Kiwi being Paige Hareb.
This year’s edition of the Durban IFF has a strong African focus, running to 40 features and 38 shorts, and a very solid pan-Africa line-up. It includes the two major African titles currently doing the international rounds. Fresh from Cannes Malian director Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu (also playing the NZIFF) plays alongside Biyi Bandele’s adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel set in post-independence Nigeria, Half of a Yellow Sun.
While the festival didn’t invite What We Do in the Shadows, it does have low-budget Ethiopian vampire film Beti and Amare.
The Durban International Film Festival takes place from 17 – 27 July.
