New US awards bash gets Tickled

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) have announced the nominees for the inaugural Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

David Farrier & Dylan Reeve’s Tickled gets two nominations, for the headline Best Documentary Feature category and the Best First Documentary Feature category.

There’s some pretty stiff competition, with Berlinale winner Fire at Sea and Roger Ross Williams’ Life, Animated among the films lining up alongside Tickled.

Life, Animated picks up three nods, plus an honorary award for subject Owen Suskind who’s named a Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary.

Elsewhere in the nominations, Ava DuVernay’s 13th is one of the three titles with a pack-leading five nominations. du Vernay is due in NZ early next year to shoot part of Disney fantasy feature A Wrinkle in Time, starring Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey, Also with five nominations are O.J.: Made in America by Ezra Edelman and J Clay Tweel’s Gleason.

The Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards winners will be presented their awards at a ceremony on 4 November (NZ time) in New York.
