Made with China’s CCTV9 for Animal Planet, the show follows basketball Yao Ming (aka The Great Wall) in Africa to see the consequences of the illegal ivory and rhino horn trade.

NHNZ MD Kyle Murdoch said in a statement, “It is a rare honour to get recognition for a film with a cause that everyone at NHNZ is truly passionate about.”

Saving Africa’s Giants will compete against NatGeo’s Wild Hawaii and three PBS shows from its Nature strand, Ireland’s Wild River, Snow Monkeys and Touching the Wild.

The News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on Tuesday 29 September (NZ date) in New York. The full list of nominees is here.
