NZ-made genre titles vote winners in US

Over the weekend Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople took the audience award for narrative feature Montclair Film Festival, ahead of his and Jemaine Clement’s What We Do in the Shadows (pictured, top) collecting two wins from the Fangoria Chainsaws.

Shadows won the Chainsaw awards for Best Limited Release and Best Screenplay. The film wasn’t the only title with strong Kiwi connections picking up wins or mentions.

Also named a winner was TV show Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which won Best TV Series and Best TV Actor (Bruce Campbell). The show was also among the top five for Best TV Supporting Actor (Ray Santiago); Best TV Supporting Actress (Dana Delorenzo); and Best TV Makeup/Creature FX (Roger Murray).

Jason Lei Howden’s Deathgasm took a couple of top-five placings for Best Score and Best Makeup/Creature FX. For the latter award it missed out to Weta Workshop, whose work on Krampus took the win.

Krampus was also a nominee for several other awards: Best Score, Wide Release, Actress (Toni Collette), Supporting Actor (David Koechner) and Supporting Actress (Krista Stadler).
