NZ On Air confirms children’s TV and online content

Christchurch-based Whitebait get the lion’s share of the funding announced, for the lion’s share of the air time. The company will produce a whopping 180 hours of What Now and The Adam And Eve Show for 2017. Other children’s shows returning next year are Pickled Possum’s Sticky TV and Pop-Up’s The Moe Show (pictured, top), which also gets support for a Christmas special.

New show Kiri And Boo will use claymation animation for a pre-school audience. The show comes from Field Theory (Philippa Campbell, Fiona Copland and Tim Sanders), which also has thedownlowconcept’s Gary of the Pacific (fka Chief Gary) in post.

Kiri And Boo is the second co-production funded by NZ On Air hoping to access the NZ Screen Production Grant scheme. (The first was Whitebait’s Darwin & Newts, being produced with India’s Toonz Animation.)

At the upper end of the children’s market, The Outlook for Someday (TOFD) gets support for its teen-targeted Someday Stories, a series of six sustainability-focused stories by young filmmakers. TOFS founder and director David Jacobs spoke about the project in an interview with Crewed last month. Someday Stories will screen online, via the sites of TOFS partners, The Wireless, Māori Television and thecoconet.tv.

“We continue to look for and support new ways to expose our youngest citizens to content that reflects our own culture,” said NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.
