NZ projects nominated for AWGIEs

Cleverman and Mahana up for Australian Writers’ Guild awards
Two projects with strong NZ connections are nominated for this year’s Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Awards.

John Collee’s screenplay for Mahana is nominated in the adapted feature category, while ANZ TV co-production Cleverman has a shot at the TV Miniseries gong.

Collee’s Mahana (travelling as The Patriarch in Australia and elsewhere overseas) is up against two productions written by Shaun Grant: Jasper Jones (written with Craig Silvey) and Berlin Syndrome. Collee has a second nomination himself, for Tanna (written with Bentley Dean & Martin Butler). Screening here in the NZIFF, Tanna competes in the Original Feature category at the AWGIEs, against Ali’s Wedding and Boys in the Trees.

Cleverman, currently here on TVNZOD, competes against The Code, Glitch, Wanted and Wolf Creek.

Wentworth, starring Danielle McCormack, has two nominations in the TV series category, competing against Rake.

Like the SWANZ awards here, the AWGIES are based on the written script – the writer’s intention rather than the finished product.

All up, 23 gongs will be presented across film, live theatre, online, radio and television categories. Athe full list of nominees is here The winners will be announced at the AWG’s AWGIE Awards on 14 October in Sydney.
