NZFC building Asian outreach

The NZFC ran its second Asia Creatives meetup on the weekend, as part of its strategy to facilitate building a community of emerging Asian screen talents and others with an interest in or focus on Asia, Asian story-telling and -tellers.

Although an NZFC initiative, the focus is on a much broader range of creators than just filmmakers, embracing creators of content also made for TV, web and live theatre.

As well as providing a networking opportunity, the meetups present some of the work being produced – but not necessarily yet widely-shared – by Asian creators.

Among the higher-profile material shown on Sunday was the first part of Hweiling Ow’s ongoing NZ On Air-supported web series Ao-terror-oa, and Chye-ling Huang’s New Blood pilot The Han Chronicles (not to be confused with the Lego Star Wars-inspired web series of the same name).

All the material shown was short-form (rather than excerpts of longer-form work) and included work by animator Chin Ann TEH; doco shorts from Nevin GOVINDASAMY, Isaiah TOUR, and Julie ZHU; and narrative shorts by Bala Murali SHINGADE, Christienne JAUREGUI, Nahyeon LEE, and Yoson AN.

The next meetup will run in early 2018. Contact the NZFC’s Asia Outreach Executive
Raymond Suen if you’d like to be informed directly about meetup details.
