#NZWF16 finds winners

After a day of screenings and presentations from YouTubers, webseries creators and specialists in VR and other emerging technologies, the seven winners of the #NZWF16 awards were announced at a ceremony in Auckland on Saturday evening.

Closing out the day’s presentations was Justin Harwood, creator of High Road. Last year the show’s second season took the festival’s Best Web Series category, narrowly beating Flat 3. This year Harwood shared exclusive material from High Road’s just-released third season.

The finalists from six award categories screened during the day, with audiences able to seeing the same material the judges had assessed. Just under one hundred shows were submitted for the awards this year, with almost a third being entered in the festival’s international category.

Two Australian shows emerged from the pack, with Dan Krige’s The Agent taking the International Web Series Show award.

Two shows by Ngāi Tahu were named winners. In the Pilot category, arts-focused Ngā Ringa Toi o Tahu took the award. Mahinga Kai took the win in the Web Show category, praised for its content and production values.

The festival’s Outstanding Vlogger award was won by The Coconet.TV’s Fasitua Amosa, with a comparison of South Island Islanders and South Auckland Islanders. The Coconet.TV also took out a second award, with The F Word winning the Special Interest category. The F Word took the award over childrens’ show RESET, NZ’s first lesbian web series Pot Luck and Two Naked Gay Guys.

The Innovation Award was won by prolific creators The Candle Wasters, whose Lovely Little Losers was also a finalist for the Web Series award. So far this year, The Candle Wasters have made and released webseries Bright Summer Night, and have two new shows on the way.

The final award of the evening, the Best Web Series award, was won by AFK, which held off stiff competition from Auckward Love, End of Term, Jack of All Trades, K Rd Stories and Lovely Little Losers. One of AFK’s producers, Hweiling Ow, opened #NZWF16 with a presentation on her upcoming show Ao-terror-oa.

The NZ Web Fest #NZWF16 was generously supported by NZ On Air, with assistance from Media Design School and Johnson & Laird. Submissions for #NZWF17 will open in February.
