Palm Springs IFF takes two Kiwi productions

Kicking off on New Year’s Day, Palm Springs has the “year’s first film festival” tag sewn up, sliding in ahead of Sundance and a couple of peripatetic Asian festivals that sometimes choose January slots.

The festival boasts 54 premieres, from world through North American to US. Having their US premieres will be the Matthew Metcalfe-produced co-production Atomic Falafel and Tammy Davis’ debut feature Born To Dance, which had its world and North American premiere in Toronto in September. Gillian Armstrong ‘s Women He’s Undressed will fly the Aussie flag in Palm Springs.

Almost nine months on from Cannes debuts a number of titles, now with solid festival track records, will make the trip. They include Naomi Kawase’s An, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Cemetery Of Splendour and Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs 1 – 11 January.
