Two NZ shorts are selected for this year’s Palm Springs International Shortfest, with a couple of the Australian entries also having strong Kiwi connections. All up the festival will present 327 films.
Ivan Barge’s well-travelled and -awarded Madam Black is one of the two NZ titles selected. As well as making shorts, Barge has recently begun a regular monthly shorts screening in Auckland, Not Long.
The second NZ selection for Palm Springs, and one of the 46 titles having its world premiere in Palm Springs, is Stick to Your Gun by Joe Hitchcock, whose feature Penny Black premiered at last year’s Arohanui Film Festival.
Australia makes a very strong showing this year, with 20 titles named. Among those is Will Goodfellow’s The Spa, featuring Jay Laga’aia (Street Legal).
David Easteal’s Melbourne-made Monaco is produced by Asuka Sylvie. Last year Sylvie was one of the Script to Screen FilmUp mentees, working with Jackie van Beek on The Inland Road. Sylvie’s short Lake had its world premiere at Palm Springs in 2013.
The Palm Springs International ShortFest runs 21 – 27 June.
