Adding to the list of local titles opening the festival, the NZIFF has announced the world premiere of Tearepa Kahi’s Poi E: The Story of Our Song as this year’s festival opener.
Poi E follows Florian Habicht’s Love Story and James Napier Robertson’s The Dark Horse into the opening slot. The festival’s Autumn Events has opened with a local documentary for the last couple of years, David Farrier & Dylan Reeve’s Tickled following last year’s The Ground We Won by Chris Pryor & Miriam Smith.
Poi E is written and directed by Tearepa Kahi (Mt Zion) and shot in early 2015. Poi E was shot by Fred Renata with Savage as production designer. Both worked with Kahi on Mt Zion. Sony will distribute.
The film is produced by Tearepa Kahi, Reikura Kahi and Alexander Behse. Behse also produced last year’s NZIFF-premiered Ever the Land.
Poi E will open the festival on 14 July in Auckland, and will also be the opening film in Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington.
The NZIFF programme for Auckland will be available from tomorrow (Tuesday 21 June). Tickets are on sale from Friday 24 June. Wellington programme will be available from Friday 24 June and tickets on sale from Thursday 30 June. The NZIFF will run in Auckland 14 – 31 July; Wellington 22 July – 7 August; Christchurch 28 July – 14 August; Dunedin 4 – 21 August. Dates for other centres are available at nziff.co.nz.
