Cameraman and director John Day died on Wednesday 7 January.
Day’s career ran from the late 60s at what was then the NZ Broadcasting Corporation, through features including Goodbye Pork Pie, The Scarecrow and Desperate Remedies. He made award-winning commercials both through his own Matte-Box Films and Flying Fish.
Day directed and co-wrote 1990 feature The Returning, which picked up awards at European film festivals, and documentaries including 2011’s The Hunt For The Pink And White Terraces. He also continued to shoot TVCs and was first unit camera on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Day died in India. His funeral will be held at 2pm, Monday 19 January at the Grey Lynn Library Hall, 474 Great North Road.
