Photographer Marti Friedlander died earlier today.
One of NZ’s most acclaimed photographers for over 50 years, Friedlander was herself the subject of a documentary, Shirley Horrocks’ 2004 Marti: the Passionate Eye.
Earlier this year some of her images, shot in the 1970s, were used for the publicity of the Doc Edge Festival. Friedlander was named this year’s Doc Edge Superhero. An exhibition of her work ran at Doc Edge’s Auckland home, Q Theatre, during the run of the festival.
Less than a month ago Friedlander received an honorary doctorate from the University of Auckland.
Marti Friedlander died following a battle with cancer. She was 88.
