Shanghai red lights Uncle Victory

Shanghai IFF organisers have had to move quickly to avoid problems around in-competition title The Uncle Victory after its lead HUANG Haibo was nailed with a prostitute in a Beijing hotel during a police crackdown.

The Uncle Victory’s screenings have been pulled off the festival schedule, although there’ll be a behind-closed-doors screening for the jury. Attending the festival in support of his film, director ZHANG Meng has declined all interview requests, as have jury president Gong Li and the festival’s international guest with experience of such scandals, Hugh Grant.

Huang is best known in China for his TV role as the lead of We Get Married in which he plays the ideal husband opposite GAO Yuanyuan. Gao was one of the Chinese stars attending the red carpet opening of SIFF.

Actor Huang also had a small part (no pun intended) in Zhang Yimou’s Oscar-submitted 2011 title The Flowers of War, which starred Christian Bale and a bunch of prostitutes who sacrifice themselves to save a bunch of schoolgirls from invading Japanese forces.

Huang has apologised for getting caught with the prostitute, his supporters claiming a) he was drunk and b) he’s popular enough not to need to pay for it.
