Kapur’s win breaks a recent always-the-bridesmaid run in the category for NZ entries. At the last two editions of the biennial event NZ films have been nominated for the Newcomer gong, but missed out.

In 2010 NZ teams took two of the three Newcomer nominations. Guy Ryan and Nick Holmes took a nod for Carving the Future; Jane Adcroft and Carla Braun-Elwert`s nomination came for Love in Cold Blood.

Braun-Elwert became a winner at the 2012 edition, taking the Editing Award for The Green Universe, while Rachael Patching and Roland Kahurangi`s Gone Curling… flew the flag in the Newcomer category.

Kapur is presently back in her native India working on projects for Animal Planet.

A pair of Outlook for Someday titles were also nominated for Panda Awards, in the Youth category. On the night Natasha Bishop’s Arboraceous and Michelle Vergel de Dios’ 15 Ways missed out.

The awards major winner was Colin Stafford-Johnson’s On a River in Ireland, made for PBS. It took the festival’s highest honour, the Golden Panda, as well as the Script gong and a half-share of the Cinematography award.
